PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida - A spectator bit off another man's earlobe and an infant girl was knocked out of her mother's arms during a brawl after a youth baseball game, police said Tuesday.
The fight occurred Monday night when the game ended and one of the losing team's players was "loud and boisterous" as he left the field, police spokesman Chuck Johnson said.
A fan of the winning team then punched the player in the head, causing the teenager's father to get involved in the fight, Johnson said.
The spectator bit off the father's left earlobe and escaped, Johnson said. The father was later treated and released at Port St. Lucie Medical Center.
Caught in the middle of the brawl was a mother and her 9-month-old daughter, who was knocked from her mother's arms to the ground, Johnson said. She was not injured.
Police have not released the names of anyone involved in the melee or made any arrests, Johnson said. An investigation is ongoing and officers are reviewing home videos of the brawl, he added.
The teams were playing in a statewide competition that continues Tuesday night. Police will be at those games, Johnson said.
Port St. Lucie is about 50 miles northwest of West Palm Beach.
Two years ago in Miami, about 20 men charged the field and fought during a baseball game for 4 and 5 year olds. Weeks earlier in Hollywood, Fla., a youth baseball coach broke an umpire's jaw during an argument.
Caesar's Commentary
Boy those parents really take youth baseball seriously. ALMOST as serious as Japanese take baseball.
You know, baseball was invented in Japan. That is what they tell me here.
They also tell me that the Giants are the only team in Japan. (Incidentally they are the only team on TV too).
Oh and as for the major leagues, that is like the farm league for Japanese players. (I have tried to explain to Japanese the paradox; when Japanese play in America they become famous in Japan, when Americans play here in Japan they become forgotten)
Besides, the Mariners, Dodgers and Mets are the only Major League teams, right? How could you have a league with only three teams?
Yes I know, the other day when a Yankee pitcher threw a one hitter, or Randy Johnson struk out 17 people in one game, those were nice, but Ichiro batting 1 for 3 with that really nice single clearly outshined the others.
Folks, when are Japanese going to realize they suck at baseball (and all sports for that matter) and having three or four players in the majors is on par with countries like Dominican Republic and Ecuador. Big deal. I am also looking forward to the day they realize that just because soccer is popular here does not mean they are good at it. I mean who DOESN'T get into the world cup? Even America gets to the World Cup and they are terrible. They are terrible because they think soccer is a sissy sport (which it is) and they still beat Japan. America's REAL athletes play baseketball and football.
Get over it Japan, you suck at sports, you have no grass in your parks and you are better off buying the teams than trying to play with real athletes.
