What makes you smart? I havent been here very long and I dont understand even a little of Japanese culture. I dont think most of the world does. Something strikes me as very odd though.

Why the hell does every Japanese person I meet asume all gaijin do not speak Japanese? Granted a lot dont but its like a Japanese person going to North American and speaking English. Does everyone stare in amazement, mouths open and slowly saying amazing! (sugoi) And then there are the others that just ignore your japanese and answer you in english, terrible English. I cant recall a time when a Japanese man said thank you at my store and I answered with your welcome in Japanese for fear Id offend him. Got a silly story? Share it. I have to admit though, its given me a great will to amaze the crap out of people.

  I Believe they might take it as a sign of respect for them. Only if you think highly of them, you would bother to learn their language. The Japanese are much more sensitive to those kinds of things. So perhaps amazed isn't the correct word, perhaps they are thrilled.

  And If I compare my experiences in Japan with those in Malaysia, Indonesia (excluding Bali) and China, I do conclude that the Gaijin in Japan are most likely to have no clue about the local language (other then a small number of key phrases which are famliar to each and every Gaijin. I almost believe them to be a subliminal message hidden in the airplane movies for all Japan-inbound lines). I wonder whether the average duration-of-stay for JapanGaijin is also the shortest.

  I think that the Japanese believe it is more polite in assume that someone can not do something than it is to assume that they can. What makes it more polite is that a person does not loose face for being unable to do something.

  You both have a logical honest response. Its far more impressive than Klarps and his bubbling cow shit Im normally acustomed too. I think you both have a point. I never thought of Japanese people being thrilled about it. Being polite did come to mind and I come from a society where its not all that common. Its unfair to assume that everywhere is the same obviously. I dont mind it actually, it gives me energy. I want to learn the language all that much more.
