> > The age comment reminds me of a story. I was at a party in Japan and one of my Japanese friends wanted to introduce me to his girlfriend. I thought she looked to be about 20 years old. In the course of the conversation, she asked me how old I thought she was. Rather than telling her how old I thought she looked, I asked her to show me her palm. The truth is, I do not know anything about reading palms, but I saw someone do it once. So, I mimicked what I saw. I carefully studied her palm and pretended to measure things and count things and whatever it is palm-readers do when they hope to be paid. My friend was laughing because he knew me well enough to know I was bull-shitting her. She, however, believed me. Eventually, I told her that, according to her palm, I thought she was 20 years old. She kind of stuttered and stumbled a bit and told me that most people thought she looked 19. I told her I had just looked at her palm not her face. I asked her how old she was and she said 21. I think that was the last thing she said to me for the rest of the evening. > > > > In regards to your responses to my list, the problem with avoiding other gaijin is that they can often be great resources. > > > > As for “gaijin privileges”, it refers people who choose to ignore polite social norms because they know that, as foreigners, no one will call them on their anti-social behavior.
